The Palladium Contract
The NYMEX palladium contract (PA) covers 100 troy ounces, quoted in dollars per ounce. One tick is $0.05 per ounce, worth $5 per contract. At $1,000 per ounce that sounds modest, but palladium has traded far above that and moves in chunks — daily swings of several percent are unremarkable in this market.
Its history says the rest. Palladium spiked above $3,000 an ounce in the turmoil of early 2022, then gave most of it back within a couple of years. Traders who confuse that kind of move with a normal market do not last long in it.
Why Palladium Is Different
- Concentrated supply. Russia and South Africa produce the bulk of world palladium. Sanctions fears, export issues, or mine problems there move price violently.
- Auto catalyst demand. Like platinum, palladium's main use is catalytic converters, historically for gasoline vehicles. EV adoption is a long-term headwind.
- Thin liquidity. Palladium trades a fraction of gold's volume. Orders move the market, spreads widen, and gaps are common.
- History of extremes. Palladium has gone through both massive spikes and brutal collapses within a few years. Neither end was gentle.
Who Should Trade It, and How
Honest answer: palladium is not a beginner market. If you trade it, use limit orders, cut size well below what your account technically allows, and expect fills worse than the screen showed. Many traders get their platinum-group exposure through platinum instead, where the book is deeper.
Futures trading involves substantial risk of loss and is not suitable for all investors — in palladium, read that sentence twice. If you are determined, watch the quotes and charts long enough to see a few of its signature moves before putting on a position.
If you still want exposure after all that, treat the first trades as reconnaissance. One contract, limit orders only, and a stop sized in dollars you can genuinely afford to lose. Watch how the fills come back compared with gold or silver. Many traders conclude after a few weeks that the lesson was worth the small cost — and that their platinum-group view is better expressed in platinum, or simply left alone. There is no rule that says every market deserves your money.
